Beautiful words stir my heart. I will recite a lovely poem about the king, for my tongue is like the pen of a skillful poet.
Almost every time in this life we have to make a decision. There is a decision that does not have to go through deep contemplation because it is not give significant impact. What we want to eat, what clothes would we wear, what kind of movie we would watch and so on. But there are some decisions if we choose it will give big impact and have a long consequence, and even it might change our life direction.
We all know that the time cannot be repeated, even though in another time we could change some of important decisions. For example, we have taken the decision to run a business/work in a field/specific place. But as time goes by we finally knew that it was not a right decision, we still can end our business or get out of the job. Even if we binding a commitment with someone to be girlfriend/boyfriend or even been engaged, then we realize that we have taken wrong decision, we can still break the commitment in halfway. But certainly there are consequences to borne. We experience sadness, disappointment, feelings hurt, losing good relationship, loss of materials, etc, as well as losing a lot of time which could be used to focus on other more valuable things.
But there is a decision that absolutely does not have a way to change it. Namely spouse in a marriage. Once you have been married to someone, you cannot say to God, “Lord, I have wrong choosing her/him as a wife/husband. I want to divorce her/him and get married with others. God’s word says, “The man who hates and divorces his wife,” says the Lord, the God of Israel… (Malachi 2:16a) There is no way to turn around in marriage.
It is not too difficult to choose between sin or not, the good and bad. But there are many things in these lives where the all options are good and not contrary with God’s word. Need sensitivity and wisdom of God to choose. Therefore before making a decision and move, please seriously pray and ask wisdom and the guidance of God, then consider everything carefully.
Jesus gives very clear two illustrations in Luke 14: 25-35. This passage talks about the cost in following Jesus, we have to give up everything we have. But through these verses Jesus also teach us that before taking an important decision, we must “figure it”. In “The Message” version bible, this passage titled “FIGURE THE COST”.
“Is there anyone here who, planning to build a new house, doesn’t first sit down and figure the cost so you’ll know if you can complete it? If you only get the foundation laid and then run out of money, you’re going to look pretty foolish. Everyone passing by will poke fun at you: ‘He started something he couldn’t finish.’
Or can you imagine a king going into battle against another king without first deciding whether it is possible with his ten thousand troops to face the twenty thousand troops of the other? And if he can’t, won’t he send an emissary and work out a truce?”
(Luke 14:28-32 MSG)
Before making important decisions, we have to “Figure the cost”, whether we are able to “Pay” or not. We must realize and understand any risks that will happen, because there is nothing’s one hundred percent that will seamlessly. There must be constraints. Then look into us, whether we have enough strength to run it, whether we are strong passes all changes, challenges, obstacles, even those people comments about our decisions. Are we could undergo and resolve the decisions until the end. And if the decision was directly influence on the family or those closest to us, make a deal with them to undergo together the decisions with all the consequences. An obstacle that often happens is that we are often too controlled by certain desires that make it hard to be objective in considering.
Then it is much needed advice, prayer, and support from parents and spiritual leaders in Christ. Because they are the ones that God has placed upon us. There is God’s anointing and blessing if we are respect and obey them.
Knowing what is right is like deep water in the heart; a wise person draws from the well within.
Refuse good advice and watch your plans fail; take good counsel and watch them succeed.
If we have done with all those things, then we will be stronger and mentally we ready to through it. Not in order that we should rely on ourselves because we will not be able to walk without God. To undergo the decisions in the times ahead, there is always God’s leading, wisdom, help, miracles, anointing and grace to bear all things because God gives us strength, so we can say: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13). But with ‘counting and considering costs’, at least we have learned to be responsible and mature and not emotionally and impulsive in taking decisions. From the beginning we have to ask for wisdom and sensitivity from God in every decision-making process. Let the Holy Spirit guide us at the Father’s will, which means we must be prepared if the decision is God wants us to take was turns out not as we wish. We have to obey to God’s will.
Among the many decisions, there is specific decision in which the Apostle Paul says in Galatians 1:15-17,
“But when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb and called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, my immediate response was not to consult any human being. I did not go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was…”
When the apostle Paul received a special call from God to preach the gospel to the Non Jewish, for a moment he did not consult any human being and did not go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before him was.
The point here is not to act alone as if do not need others or do not respect authority above us, but the intention is: If we receive a specific command from God to do something, and we really believe it comes from God’s command, the best way is immediately to do it! Do not procrastinate. Do not busy looking for people’s opinions. Because people’s opinions can be vary and actually could make us confused and hesitant. If God commands us to do something for Him, obey and promptly do.
What are the decisions that you have to take these days?
Make sure you take the decisions which appropriate with God’s word and make your decision according His will.
But if you currently have took the wrong decision, do not lose hope because God can help you.
Happy run your decisions along with God and do it until the end.
