Beautiful Words

Beautiful words stir my heart. I will recite a lovely poem about the king, for my tongue is like the pen of a skillful poet.

( 2 Samuel 9: 1 – 13  ;  2 Samuel 16: 1 – 4  ;  2 Samuel 19: 24 – 30 )

Many of us might be unfamiliar with the name of Ziba.  Unpopular name and just few times referred in the moment between King David and Mephibosheth.  But is not no matter how small written in the Bible would certainly have contributed to our spiritual growth?

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

(Romans 15:4)

For many years Ziba served as a servant at Saul’s family, and he was diligent in his duties. Even when Saul had died and no longer be the number one family in Israel, Ziba is still referred to as Saul’s servant.

Perhaps our current position is not in the favorite position; even the others may not feel the difference whether we were exists or not because we are not considered as an important person. But just keep faithful and do the best, because we even never know that the way that we are going through now, later on will lead us to the higher things.

Moments after David ascended the throne as king of Israel, David intends to keep his promise to his friend Jonathan, Saul’s son. A binding promise they did a few years ago, to maintain the brotherhood between both of them and their descendants.  Then to realize his promise, David called Ziba to ask if there are any left from the Saul’s family. Ziba’s response then will determine not only the future of Saul’s descendants, but even his own future. Then Ziba come before King of David.

The right response would lead us in the right direction, which will bring us to the extraordinary things, which will be awarded by God to lift us to a higher position, beyond of our thoughts.

When David asked Ziba is there someone left of the house of Saul, Ziba immediately inform about the presence of Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, who live at the house of Machir son Ammiel in Lo Debar and lame in both feet. Then King David took Mephibosheth from Lo Debar to stay in Jerusalem and return all Saul and his family possessions to Mephibosheth.  David even gave an honor to Mephibosheth to be able eating together with him as a son of the king. So what part earned by Ziba? Ziba got the position and trust from King David as Saul abundant treasure managers, which by David has been returned to Mephibosheth. As a manager, Ziba and his 15 sons were definitely enjoyed a much better life.

Need humility and generosity to see other people was appointed by God. Moreover, if we ourselves who becoming a “door” to those person who promoted by God, Even at a higher position than us. And often it is also being a key for ourselves to get promotion from God.

After receiving the mandate from King David to manage Mephibosheth’s assets, Ziba promises to do whatever according to David’s commands. There is no other way if we want to do God’s call perfectly, besides doing right and obediently as God wants. Not only the right goals, but also how.

The more we grow in the Lord’s call, we often need to choose between all the good and right choice, which is really God wants.

Unchanged Heart…. Unfortunately, Ziba failed doing this! Ziba fall into betrayal sin to Mephibosheth. After sensing the galore of facilities and treasures as manager, Ziba became greedy and wanted to steal the glory for himself before the king. When David fled from the palace because Absalom coup, his own son, Mephibosheth wants to participate go with David. Mephibosheth asked Ziba to prepare a donkey saddled for riding because he was lame. But what is Ziba did? By brings various supplies and donkeys he meets David and said that Mephibosheth would like to reclaim the Saul’s throne, his father. This makes David decided that everything belongs to Mephibosheth become belong to Ziba. We never know how the ending of Ziba’s history, because although Ziba finally got Mephibosheth possessions, yet after that his name was never mentioned again.

In order to complete the God’s call, we should still be a good and faithful servant. Remember that how high our position, how big “the glory” and blessing that we receive, we are still a servant who managing it. God is the real owner of everything. Do not be greedy and want more than what God has entrusted to us.
