Beautiful Words

Beautiful words stir my heart. I will recite a lovely poem about the king, for my tongue is like the pen of a skillful poet.

(Bible verses source: Genesis 25:19 to Genesis 33:20, Hosea 12:4-5)

Do we always run away from the problem?

Trying to solve but instead even more complicated and even obtain new problems?

Or are there things that haunt us for many years without even knowing how to end it?

For decades Jacob had life in a runaway. Ran from Esau to Laban’s house, and finally had to go out from Laban’s house. The climax was when he had to clear up his relationship with Esau. But one action that was taken by Jacob marvelously solves his problem…

He has begun deceive in the womb. Unlike most unified twins and have closely relation, they are both jostled each other in their mother’s womb. Furthermore, they are both growing with different handling.  Jacob became beloved son of his mother. And Esau, the eldest, is father’s pride. Jacob is very close to his mother, he likes to dwell in tents, even proficient in cooking.  His cooking aromas are able to lure Esau who was famished after hunting, an activity that often he did because of his father, Isaac, really like to eat meat that Esau brought from hunting. So Esau who indeed despised his birthright, agreed to sell his birthright with delicious red stew and bread which made by Jacob. When Isaac was old, he intends to give birthright blessing to Esau.

At his mother initiative, Jacob deceive his father by wearing Esau’s clothes and kidskin to bind his slippery hands and neck, so that when his father had been blurred feel it , believing that he was Esau. By bringing Isaac’s favorite meat which cooked by his mother, Jacob successfully precede Esau’s birthright blessing. How hurt Esau when he knowing that. Esau had a grudge to Jacob. Just respect for Isaac makes Esau restrain his desire. After Isaac died, Esau was determined to carry out his intention to kill Jacob.

At the initiative of his mother, Jacob fled to his uncle’s house, Laban.

Does this problem is solved?

Of course not! Even a new chapter is beginning

Jacob, the clever, in fact can also cheated by Laban. Rachel who coveted by Jacob to became his wife with pay 7 years of dedication, has been exchanged by Laban with Leah on his wedding night. Jacob was willing to serve 7 more years to gain his dream woman. Even, Laban successful cheated Jacob and changing his wages ten times. After 20 years Jacob serves Laban, Jacob finally ran out of the Laban’s house with bring all the family and all possessions were successfully acquired.

Once again Jacob ran away from the problem

And once again, if so the problem is solved?? Definitely not!

Laban chased him

On the 3rd day when Laban was told that Jacob fled, Laban and their relatives pursued for 7 days journey away, and succeed catch up Jacob’s entourage in the mountains of Gilead. Laban was angry because Jacob left without saying goodbye, but even more is because of his teraphim gods was missing. Rachel silently took him. God protects Jacob and spoke to Laban in a dream not to say anything to Jacob. Eventually a peace treaty was reached between Laban and Jacob. Done with Laban, Jacob has been awaited by the problems that have been left out for decades ago. Esau was welcomes to Jacob! But as usual, Jacob tried to complete the problem with his own way. Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau. However, the reports that he received increasingly make Jacob’s heart shrunken.  Esau is coming to meet Jacob with four hundred men along with him. It was not a delightful and sweet way to a family reunion who decades apart. Jacob’s heart is getting restless.

With his treasure and tactical cleverness, Jacob divided his men and livestock became two forces. Because he thinks: “If Esau comes and attacks one group, the group that is left may escape.” Not only that, hundreds of cattle had been prepared to be presented to Esau

But… who ensure that no matter how well we do attempt, certainly can solve our problem??

Only one step away Jacob meets Esau. At that is Jabbok River. What happens before crossing the Jabbok River, will largely determine what Jacob experienced afterwards.

After Jacob take across his children, wife, and all his property, Jacob lived alone. And a mysterious man wrestled with him until daybreak.

Hosea 12:4-5

…………… In his bravery he wrestled with God. He wrestled with angel and win…”

Genesis 32:28

Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”

Finally, the time comes. From a distance Jacob saw Esau. Jacob organized positions of his people. He put the female slaves and their children in the front. Leah and her children are behind them, and Rachel and Joseph at hindmost. Jacob went before them, and bowed down to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother. What then happens is staggering, far beyond what he imagined.

Genesis 33:4

But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept

All grudges and wounds that for decades pent-up being exuviate

Soluble with forgiveness tears and yearning

What could change Esau in one night??

Jacob for decades dodges and fled from Esau’s grudge. Also for decades Jacob lived with the awareness that his life was threatened about to be killed by Esau.   And when the meeting with Esau could not inevitable again, Jacob took an appropriate step.

Jabbok River be a witness how after take across the entire family, Jacob deliberately taking time to be alone.  Overnight, within of fear and pressure problems that he faces, Jacob diligently and persistently struggle with God and not let Him go until he was blessed. And ever since it Jacob’s name changed to be Israel. At the time God’s blessing poured out on Jacob, and at the same time God’s power work miraculously to change Esau’s heart. So what is feared by Jacob does not happen.

If at that time he acquires the birthright with his own way, legally that night he received a blessing from the Lord himself. Even God proudly calls himself as the God of Abraham, God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

There are times in our weakness; we felt that our problems are so hard. In fact, almost always the real problem that we have is not as big as our fears. Such an object placed in front of the lights, produces a large shadow, far beyond its original size. Oftentimes what we see is a shadow of the problem. It appears so big that sometimes undid our strength and hope. The horrific shadows are growing in our imagination. As a result we are overrun with anxiety, fear, worry, and even despair.

When we are in trouble, the key is not how to solve the problem but how we in the firmness and sincerity to wrestle with God.

Let Him correcting our life, allow our heart to letting go of what is not pleasing, humbled our heart to admit all the mistakes, and seek the Lord with wholehearted.

There is a miraculous power and wisdom of God is poured out for those who wait upon the Lord, so it can endure and act appropriately for any problems that occur.

Let us complete all our turmoil in the God’s presence. Soon we will see His miraculous deeds.
